Maharajalela Monorail Station is named after the historical Independence Stadium
(Malay: Stadium Merdeka), where Malaysia was declared independent from the
British Empire on 31st August 1957. Due to its historical significance, the
underground station features lots of cultural decorations, including the
text of the Malaysian national pledge on the wall of the station’s
concourse, flags and emblems of each state of Malaysia on every pillar, as
well as a 14-pointed star motif on the ceiling above the escalator.
Travellers who disembark at this station are within few minutes walk to
landmarks such as Merdeka Stadium, Masjid Al-Bukhary, Menara Merdeka Maybank
(formerly known as Menara Merdeka 118) and 118 Mall.
The distance between Maharajalela Station and Petaling Street (Chinatown) is
approximately 500 meters, which takes around 5-7 minutes of walking time.
Once you exit the monorail
Station, you can walk northward along Jalan Maharajalela, and then turn right
onto Jalan Petaling, which leads you straight to Petaling Street.

At the heart of its design, a breathtaking glass dome roof crowns the
atrium, flooding the central corridors with beautifully filtered natural
light to create an inviting, open-air ambience. The mall’s interior design

authentic local artistic touches into an unforgettable experience.
Stadium Merdeka
Stadium Merdeka
Built in 1957 to host the formal declaration of independence of the
Federation of Malaya, Stadium Merdeka stands as Malaysia’s most iconic
historic venue and a celebrated national heritage landmark. It was here on
August 31, 1957, that Tunku Abdul Rahman proclaimed "Merdeka!" seven times,
marking the birth of a free and sovereign nation.
As one of the region's earliest modernist architectural marvels, the stadium
holds immense historical reverence—having hosted major national
celebrations, historic sporting achievements, and international cultural
events throughout the decades.
Today, meticulously restored to preserve its original character, Stadium
Merdeka anchors the precinct alongside Stadium Negara and the modern Menara
Merdeka Maybank architecture, serving as a timeless civic landmark and
dynamic urban attraction for local and international visitors alike.
