Make MRT commuter-friendly, says KL mayor

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 20, 2011) - The proposed Mass Rapid Transit (MRT)
line must provide good accessibility or it would be cumbersome for
passengers, says Mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Fuad Ismail.
He said the stations should be commuter-friendly with proper pedestrian
linkages.
“If the commuters have to walk very far to get to the stations, it defeats
the purpose of having such an efficient mode of public transportation,” he
said last week.
“Also, if possible, the pedestrian walkways should be air-conditioned for
the comfort of commuters.” |

He said suggestions and methods to minimise the effects of the MRT line
construction in the project’s Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) report
should be implemented accordingly.
About 9.5km of the 51km line will run beneath the Kuala Lumpur city
centre.
Once completed, the line will have 35 stations, four interchange stations
and 13 park and ride stations.
Petaling Jaya City councillor Derek Fernandez said the main concern is the
lack of inter-connectivity of the project with other modes of public
transport.
“It should be connected with the Light Rail Transit (LRT) systems and bus
terminals,” he said.
He also said the line’s orientation could have been better as dense areas
such as New Town PJ, Section 52 and Kelana Jaya should be served by the
line.
“These are all areas of high commercial density,” he added.
Fernandez said the line should be built underground as the areas in PJ to
be served by the line are very congested.
